    Food Bank Support

    We will also continue with our support for the food bank and we encourage you to bring your cheque book instead of food boxes and cans, although food will also be gratefully accepted. Cheques are a more convenient way of donating and allow the food bank to buy their own food at a lesser cost. Tax receipts will be issued for donations over $10.00.Cheques should be made payable to “Second Harvest”. Please assist in passing this on to your fellow members. Last year we raised a notable sum of $712 with an attendance of about 140 members and it would be fantastic to be able to beat $1,000 thisyear.

    No dropout, Refreshments after, Pre-registration by Email to Leader. Depart 9:30 am, Glen Cross Side Trail access point on 3rd Line EHS. From Hwy 9 (east of Orangeville), drive 5.5 km north on 3rd Line EHS to Hockley Rd, turn right and then left at the jog, then continue north on the 3rd Line for a further 1.1 km to the parking area on your right. Hwy 401 Exit 431 at Waverly Rd. Travel north for 17 km on Regional Rd 57. Turn right at Regional Rd 20. After 2 km, turn left at Woodley Rd and travel 2 km to conservation area parking lot. Bring some toonies/loonies for the parking meter. We start the day wandering along trails in Woolwich Township, winding through an oasis of rural tranquility, and make our way to Elmira where we explore a local sugar bush and take in all the sights and aromas at the 49th annual Elmira Maple Syrup Festival, recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s largest maple syrup festival.     No dropout, Hiking boots, No dogs, Backpacking training. Depart 9 am, Rattlesnake Point Conservation Area upper parking lot. Enter from Appleby Line, 1 km north of Derry Rd. Parking fees. Brenda Dalglish, (416) 601-0378 between 7 pm and 10 pm Are you thinking of going on a backpacking trip but don’t know if you can carry the weight? Do you need to train for an upcoming backpacking trip? Do you just want to get more of a workout from a regular hike? If yes, this is the series for you! Hikers are encouraged to bring along a fully loaded pack for increasingly longer hikes over varied terrain. All are loop hikes to avoid having to shuttle packs as well as people. Of course, any hiker is welcome – regardless of the size or contents of your backpack. If you haven’t yet purchased a backpack, don’t run out and buy one for this series. Get a large day pack and fill it with books, rocks, bottles of water, etc. (with something soft but firm against your back) and it will be heavy enough. See what backpacks people have and talk to other hikers about the pros and cons of various backpacks. Today’s hike is through Rattlesnake Point and Crawford Lake Conservation Areas. Subsequent hikes are April 14 and 21.

    Level 2 hike, 14 km loop hike. Depart 9:30 a.m. from new meeting place, Georgetown Marketplace. Trailhead at Charleston Sideroad and McLaren Sideroad. This will be a loop hike totally on the Alton side trail to the scenic view of the Pinnacle, then lunch at the Alton Inn (this is the 1/2 way point) before returning to the cars. Terrain: Relatively level and straight. Dropout 1/2 way, refreshments after. Wear hiking boots, bring icers, a snack and something to drink.

    Trekking the Optimum Route: Hiking the Bruce Trail’s Bayview Escarpment Reroute

    I was sitting on the edge of a limestone cliff overlooking the broad wooded plain of the Bighead River Valley. I was watching seven turkey vultures circle in the sky. One swept so close I could see his speculative eye and the angry red of his featherless head. . His wingtip almost brushed my outstretched arm. I had been walking the Bayview Extension, a 69-km reroute of the Bruce Trail just east of Owen Sound. If I had needed an excuse to justify my leisure, the vulture had just supplied it. But I was still thinking of the “why” of the reroute. the Bruce Trail was already the longest and oldest hiking trail. After all, at 840 kilometres, the Bruce Trail was already the longest and oldest hiking trail in Canada. Why add 69 new kilometres? To answer that question, I reflected on the evolution of the trail.

    In 1960, four men sat around a kitchen table looking at a map of Ontario. They called themselves the Bruce Trail Committee, and they were there because one of the men, Ray Lowes, a metallurgist at Stelco, had a dream, a long-distance hiking path from Queenston to Tobermory along the Niagara Escarpment. Seven years later, with the help of hundreds of volunteers divided into nine local clubs, the dream had become a reality, and the Bruce Trail was born.

    But, as Beth Kümmling, executive director of the Bruce Trail Conservancy, explains, “When the Trail was first laid out in the late 1960s,

    there was urgency to get the trail on the ground in time for the 1967 official opening of the Bruce Trail.” The optimum route would have been to follow the Niagara Escarpment as closely as possible. But, because of the deadline and the fact that much of this public trail had to pass over private land, the best route was not always available at the time.

    In 2002, four other visionaries around a different table and looked at a different series of maps. They were looking at the peninsula that jutted into Georgian Bay between Owen Sound and Meaford. The Escarpment looped up into this peninsula as far as the Bayview Escarpment Provincial Nature Reserve, but the Bruce Trail cut straight across the bottom of this loop.
